What does Thanksgiving mean to you?

Well, Thanksgiving is fast approaching and I still have Halloween decorations on my walls and I started thinking about what this holiday means to me.

Lately I have been hearing about people who totally bash the holiday due to the Historical associations, but to me, Thanksgiving is not a day where I remember the pilgrims or the Indians or anything like that, to me is a day to sit down with family and friends to eat Turkey. :)

But it is not just about Turkey (now writing about it it's making me hungry) it's about taking the time to think about all the things that we are grateful for. And I must say I am sad that I will not have my family with me this Thanksgiving, but I will spend Wednesday with my sister-in-law and my cousin-in law to have dinner and then on Thursday I will be going to my friend's family's house to have Thanksgiving Dinner and the next day to her sister's wedding.

I am sad that my husband is going to be out of town for Thanksgiving, and I miss him so much. But I am grateful to have him as my husband and the father of my daughters and I know that we will be spending Christmas together and that makes me happy.

What does Thanksgiving mean to you? Do you celebrate it? Is it just about the turkey? Or do you take the time to be grateful for all the blessings that you have?

  1. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Unlike Christmas where I often find myself so stressed out from all the running around that I don't enjoy it till it's over, Thanksgiving is about family and being grateful for all that we have in our lives. I'm very lucky that I will get to celebrate the holiday with my whole family this year. I'm so sorry that you and your husband will be apart this holiday but I'm wishing you both a wonderful day!

  2. One year since I am not with you and the girls....=(...I came to my mother and father....your grandparents to be with them and celebrate Thanksgiving.I was happy to be here and to be thankful for you, Laura ,your daughters,Gabrielle, Elsie and Husband....for Karla ,my only niece.....your cousin, for her daughter Mia Leilany and Karlas Husband that is safe and back from Afganistan. Thankful for my parents.... Grace and Chalin 89 and 90...strong,happy and healthy. For my sister Marla and thankful that we have this beautiful land with so many birds and trees that comfort us everyday.

So many other reasons to be thankful...but for the ones that have less...the best Life ahead for all....

Big Hugs and I miss you so much...=( Love You, Ma-Buela ( Me )

  3. Happy Thanksgiving!! We celebrated ours last month. Thanksgiving means family and catching up on what's going in each other lives, sharing successes and also pitfalls. Also for us planning Christmas as well. Hope your Thanksgiving is a blessed one.

  4. Kathy,
It's interesting what you say, our family celebrates Christmas by just being together in the house we open gifts and it's very low key. I enjoy Christmas more than Thanksgiving as in Thanksgiving we tend to gather in a bigger group so there's more to cook and more to clean up. And Christmas Eve is my daughter's birthday so we have a big Birthday Party/Christmas Eve, and that's a whole 'nother story :)

  5. F.L.A.G,
You guys are in Canada right? What is the story behind your Thanksgiving? You celebrate it last month, so does it have a different back story? I would like to learn more about it. :)

  7. Laura, sorry to hear you won't be with your hubby for Thanksgiving. It sounds like the rest of your family has you well taken care of for your turkey feast though. :-)

Thanksgiving to me is a time to reflect on the year past and recognize the blessings, the hardships, and the memories that were created. It's also a time where I take the time to tell the people I love just how thankful I am to have them in my life. Of course, I tell them things like that all throughout the year, but at Thanksgiving it's more intentional gratitude.

The other thing I love about Thanksgiving is the food. It's the one day (ahem...week) throughout the year where I can pig out guilt free and live off of leftovers. Lol! And I really enjoy spending time with family and friends.

    Wishing you a blessed thanksgiving.

    ~Hugs,
    Rosann

  8. Thanksgiving is actually one of our favorite holidays. We don't celebrate Halloween so we use all the time leading up to Thanksgiving to celebrate it. The decorations go up early and we do a ton of crafts. It is great to show my children all the ways they can show thanks.

  9. I think it's always important to pause and give thanks for all that we have. To often we get caught up in what we need and forget to be thankful for what is around us every day. Happy Thanksgiving!
